How to Add a Hotmail Account to Macbook

Entegy

You have to set it up as a generic IMAP account.

Go to this page and click on the heading "Apps that support IMAP and SMTP". That will give you the correct server settings to get this set up in your Mac mail app.

It does not ask me for all the outgoing information, such as port, encrypted connection, or authentication. Anyway, it does not work, it says it can't connect

Okay, so I looked into it more and apparently Mac mail is programmed to make poor assumptions upon detecting Hotmail/Outlook.com.

I did this on Yosemite.

  1. I opened Mail and in the menubar, clicked Mail>Add account...
  2. Picked "other Mail account" (the last option)
  3. I put in a FAKE email address and fake password and clicked next. This causes auto-detect of server settings to fail
  4. On the next page, you manually put in account settings
  5. The account type is IMAP
  6. The mail server is imap-mail.outlook.com
  7. The user name is your normal Microsoft account login
  8. The password is your password. Note that if you use two-step authentication, you have to generate an app password to use here.
  9. Click next
  10. THe outgoing server is smtp-mail.outlook.com
  11. The user name is your normal Microsoft account login
  12. The password is your password, or, if you have two-step authentication on, the app password you generated earlier
  13. Click Create

And you're done.

Still, does not work, I am sill having the same problem:

Of course, if I insert the password again, nothing changes. I have already done it some times.

I remember you that I have an hotmail.it account and not hotmail.com

Is there a possibility to delete an account?

The Server URL is the same for all Outlook.com accounts. Notice that nowhere in my instructions are you typing Hotmail.com or Hotmail.it in a server URL. My Microsoft account's login isn't even a Microsoft domain name.

At this point, I don't know what else to tell you. I have a non-Microsoft email as my login and two-step authentication on, meaning I need an app password and I was able to add my account to the Yosemite Mail app with these two hurdles in my way.

Not sure if your problem has been solved or not. The following steps worked for me and hope they work for you incase you are still facing issues

1. Open Mail app on OSX

2. click on Mail menu -> Accounts..

3. If needed click on the '+' icon to add a new account and select Exchange

5. add a dummy email and dummy password then click on 'Sign In'

6. now advanced details dialog box pops up

7. Enter correct email address (in my case it was my hotmail.com account), correct password and for Internal and External URLs, enter outlook.office365.com

8. If "outlook.office365.com" doesn't work, then try "outlook.com"

9. Click on 'Sign In' and you should be all set now.
